Killing Peeps - Thanks for the kinds words. I am glad you like.
JKim - Oooo Snap! Thanks for that observation. Those chompers are old and not anatomically correct by far. I am a lazy yoot but, I suppose its time to go make some new chompers.

Pretty good on the smile, but one note that in the smile, the lips actually rise in themiddle as well, so that the lips meet just above the gum line, where they would be halfway up the top front teeth in a relaxed moputh, usually.

Hey Damien that looks really cool, do you mind if I ask what you used for refrence?
DamienB
02-27-2005, 12:12 PM
Heh, his ears are a bit small and a little low, his forehead is a little too sloped as well. There are probably a bunch of aesthetics that could be changed.
Thanks for that input Scott. I know its not accurate, it was a simple test of facial deformation.
Frankie, I always use a mirror for modeling, and animation. I might even go as far as filming myself in motion from different angles.
Thanks for the input guys....

First ship 'in-engine' for Space Jumpers, a UT2k4 mod the game dev club at my college is workin on. As with a previous UT mod, I'm model lead and level designer for the project. This was just a speedy-uv mapping and dropping it in UEd to see how the ship looked ingame.
The ship's not to scale (miscalculated my scaling). The 'final' scale has the player about as big as 1/3 the smaller fin on the rear of the ship.

Crash, that alien looking thing, that is pretty damn sweet looking! For some reason it reminds me of something from FFXI, I think it's just because of the softer highlights on it, it seems a lot of the character textures in that game had them.
Well I've decided to re-work my oldman head, I'm trying to get a z-brush model to look, well not so z-brushy, and it seems to do this, I have to use the smoothing tool A LOT! It's getting easier though. But I also had to rework it because the mesh was just a mess before, I had subdivided it while it was in tris, and that just doesn't work well, so I went back and exported the .obj in quads this time.

Neo_God - I like the way its turning out but something bothers me about the chin. If he were to have a double chin like that, would it be so narrow? I feel like it would reach further to his ears. I dunno maybe Im wrong. His ears stick out pretty far too.
Neo_God
03-06-2005, 10:06 AM
Oh yea, I forgot to mentiion that this is supposed to look fairly stylised, which is why his ears are sticking out, his nose is huge, and his head is strangely narrow. As for the chin, it's not really supposed to be a double chin, but more like sagging flesh. Though the chin bothers me a bit too, to me it's starting to look a bit flat. Thanks for the comment though!

It's from the Intron Depot artbook 1. There are 4 in total with different themes. This first 1 is general and contains a wide variety of art. The 2nd one is called Blades and contains chicks with swords, the 3rd one is Ballistics and the 4th one is Bullets and both have a lot of weapons and mech designs. Awesome books.

You may want to consider knocking the supports for the railings out as 3D geometry and having that information show through in the texture. Using alpha's on things like that will drastically save you polycount.
I've no idea what this is for/your limitations but I thought I'd mention this.
Good job so far.
Thanks, it's architectural visualization so there really isn't a polygon limit. First and probably last thanks to the guy being a nightmare to work with. I don't think they even had an architect design the building. Fire escapes where never designed intot he plan so I had to put those in. Then there's all the changes he's asking for. I may have to remove that last garage bay cause he doesn't know if the city will approve it.
Once this is finished I'm probably going to look for work and see if there are any local architectual visualization places in the Vancouver area. But if that falls through I have a couple possible projects lined up then there's the plan to go take a drafting program in the fall.
The wall won't be so washed out in the final renders. I'm starting to consider making a game environment level version, but that won't be for a little bit I think.
Minor update on this dood. Some facial detail, ears etc:
http://home.comcast.net/~dpattenden/images/d1.jpg
Hmm, weird Daz. I think I actually preferred it last time I saw it, with the very blank smooth face (your original painting of this guy seems to have a much smoother face too, less hard lines).
Don't get me wrong, it looks very cool... but I'm not really a fan of the mouth area right now.
Well, Im kind of glad you said that Paul, because Im really not sure about it. I mean, I dont really know what it is. Gills?! So Im floundering a bit ( fish pun unintentional )
I prefer the blank mouth too. Weird. Ah well, I'll detail out the rest of the body perhaps and come back to the face later.

Heh...cheers Vince...appreciated...
Silva: solid mesh man, very clean and good use of polygons /images/graemlins/smile.gif
@Daz: absolutely infatuated with this (I presume) demon, superb detail and definition... /images/graemlins/smile.gif
If the fish pun was unintentional, you wouldn't have said so afterwards... floundering indeed /images/graemlins/smile.gif
I also figured out what's partly making me think it looks "wrong" - the underlying shape of the mouth area behind the gills/whatever is actually forming a silly grin, with all the surrounding shapes and flow aiming upwards, whereas in your painting (your avatar I'm looking at), it seems to be a downward flow in the muscle shapes around the mouth, and the underlying shape is more of a wide-open scream, making it seem tormented rather than ... well, cheeky.
If I had to say the expression was anything now, I'd have to say it looks like a cheeky demon, even with the eyebrows like that... heh.

Heres a quick 3d 'sketch' that I worked on yesterday. I had a concept in mind but nothing on paper yet, so I threw down some basic shapes and came up with this after a few hours.
Really I was just trying to get a basic idea, work on a silhouette, and try to come up with a character that could 'read' well with a quick glance. As it turns out, thats rather impossible to gauge accurately when the form isnt complete yet /images/graemlins/smile.gif Regardless, it was a fun way to start a model, as opposed to tweaking every little detail as I go along.

thats what i do basically, study pictures and other peoples work to get a good feeling of anatomy, when i see a good model with good proportions and good flow or a wicked drawing or picture, my first instinct is to save it to my refs folder, must have hundreds of different models/pics/drawings stored in that folder

I second what CheapAlert said Renardin. You'd have been better off starting your own topic devoted to your mod's work.
But I guess for crits. The reddish soldier farthest on the right has an odd pinch on his torso where that symbol stands. The shoulders on that model could use a lot of work too.
The uzi model looks really well constructed, but the texture defines very little detail otherwise. It just gives the model a black and white colouration.
The tank is also a good model, but the area surrouding the turret looks very boxy, and those white outlines on the texture don't look like they belong there at all.
The walls and turret are okay, the textures seem very grainy and vague. The red zig zag on the walls also don't really fit, but I'm sure you probably have a reason. I noticed all of your mod's texture work seem to include that Scorpion tail symbol and are ultimately extremely dark. Perhaps a bit of variation?
The rest is okay.

Taking a break from another project and am making a sexy babe with guns. Her proportions are a little bit off but I wanted to make her fit a standard UT2k4 biped.
I think that I'll slap a knife in a holster on her left leg and beef up her hips a tiny bit and then skin her. Right now she's a bit under 4000 polys.
If anybody can point out any areas which might give deformation problems I'd be very gratefull.
She's based on this art from masamune shirow:

Thx for the comments, I don't go too far on some details because we work on a mod for w3d engine, wich is limited with quality.
Anyway, here is my last work. Enjoy.

Renardin, if you scale those pics down to 320x240, they will look better. You don't need images that large to pimp such a small item, it'll load better as you can see this is a thread full of images, and your textures are blurry so posting this resolution hurts your pimp.

Woo. That's a cool model. I've always liked Shirow's women.

I'm guessing you are planing a UT2004 model for this gal? I can't wait to see more.

Renardin: Your texture could use a little more... something. It looks like an overlay with a small bit of detail painted on. The details don't seem to fulfill a purpose as parts of the weapon. Perhaps you should make the undetailed areas flatter and shinier (reduce the overlay!) and add some meaniongful shapes.

Thanks folks!
Etienne...I will put her in UT2k4. I changed the body that I made for her initially so that it now fits the tandard female skeleton perfectly.
flaagan...she sure does have big glases for that hot nerdy look /images/graemlins/laugh.gif I had just hidden those for the screenshot in order to pimp her face geometry /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Renardin, that texture is mediocre. It has a lot of room for improvement, mainly on the rear area. The details there look a little bit like concrete or some kind of rock because of the blurriness and distortion.
The colours seem to have meaningless contrat to each other, gold, red and blue, which really stops it from screaming rocket launcher when I look at it. What I'm really getting at is I think you're style of texturing is simply painting details as you imagine them, with little to no regard to realism.
Also, rocket's aren't fitted into magazines, that much I know. Keep trying. The w3d engine is pretty good, and I think you just aren't using it to its limits texture wise. See Thegodzero's work, it's going towards a w3d mod too. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

DSFThug: Doom 3 has a clip-loaded rocket launcher. The point is that you don't have to wait forever to reload between shots but still have to reload sometimes. Means that RL won't be as powerful and slow as HL's RL but more of a standard combat weapon.
I wanted to work with very low budgets for a while and also always dreamed of modelling a garbage collector...

very cool man, good to see that you started him, a bit VERY fatter than the original concept /images/graemlins/wink.gif but I love fat chars anyway /images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Great texturework as always, really like the face colors. Good that you are going to slap some dirt in. I would also turn the feet out a bit to make him look a bit more relaxed.

Wow! Rockstar's is really something.
I'm working on this. It has way to many polys, 1337016 to be exact. I'll make a displacment map out of it for a lower
rez representation. And then whack the normal map onto the lower rez one. And it also needs a diffuse texture bitmap.
It's just a personal piece I'm dabbling on.

hey rockstar do u watch naruto? (anime) there was a character that used his bones as weapons, anyways his arm had bones jutting out just like yours. Deffinatly dig, I think the back of his head is alittle fishy tho. I think its supposed to be hair but looks to smooth, or is that like bone transitioning into hair there?

Got Trackmania Sunrise a few days ago and I'm going to do a few cars for it.
[cut and paste from other forum}
So the first thing I thought about when driving the Coast Car was a boat towing a caravan behind it /images/graemlins/wink.gif. So it's my first custom Car for TM:S.
Going to alternate between Amusing/stupid and proper Replacements.

Always nice when the first imports works, though it has borked up the details.dds on all cars. Will have to fondle around.
Going to start work on the skin tommorrow, but if you want a cheap laugh you can get the beta version Here (http://www.thebort.net/bort/Models/TM-S/Boat/Boattest01.zip).
Just put in /Skins/Vehicles/CoastCar. Uses the default car icon.

Apart from overly anal restictions TM:S is very easy to mod, which is nice /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

OKAY THOUGH I'M MAKING GUNS SUCH AS THIS DUKE3dISH INSPIRED ROCKET LAUNCHER. 200 triangles and a 256. Spent more polish in the uv than my other weapons as the rl is the most used q1 weapon
