MoP: is that the concept that Ocelot did a while back? It was called Shrig-Ag or somesuch. Only reason I ask is that I found that image laying in my polycount cottage or on my drive just recently.
rooster, adam, daz: thanks! i didn't spend long enough trying to get the surface texture to match the form of the face and possible bone/muscle structure though... then again I only spent about 30-40 minutes in zbrush on it. Might give it another going-over later.
Bearkub: Nope, don't think I've seen that concept? This was from my version of a Protoss from starcraft. I drew the fairly poor concept that is seen earlier in this thread (and over on CGChat)...

Thanks. /images/graemlins/smile.gif I'm basicly done with the head. The clothing contrasts his armor so its not a monochrome piece. The whole thing goes well together. Also, the mask is simi-glosy so you'll get some of the color from the cube maps. Yes its for an hl2 mod. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm pretty sure thats what he ment since he said that he was getting ready started on his first model and that is already a completed model and skin :P.
SouL, fantastic as usual, the hair looks a little dull from this far back, maybe add some brighter highlights? I like how you have him in the re4 setup with the knife in his right hand :P, but I think you could up the detail on the knife personally. It just looks a bit dull and boring compared to the rest of the model, jsut my two cents tho. I know this is an old piece of yours, but it's nice to see you work on it again, it looks really good /images/graemlins/smile.gif.
Yeah... that bastard armpit. It's really unavoidable unless I were to add a bone to control the movement of the vest. Here's an all black version witha new knife that Eclipse proposed:
http://www.planetquake.com/polycount/cottages/souldesigns/hahaha3.jpghttp://www.planetquake.com/polycount/cottages/souldesigns/hahaha4.jpg
Excellent stuff Soul. The texture on his clothing is really excellent.
His flesh textures look really "dead" though, there's no saturation or colour variation there. Also I thing the overall flesh hue is too yellow, maybe try a little more red? Maybe that's just my monitor settings. Or yours!
Damn, Soul! I'm having so much trouble getting a pair of shoulders to deform even remotely like that and there you go with a 'the weighting sucks'! /images/graemlins/smile.gif BTW, is that a specular map goin' on or just good texturework?

@Jgall21 - He and i was going to ask why a cheap copy and past if you can render it (doh:) but its a good work on the ref non the less /images/graemlins/smile.gif.
@Soul - damn nice skin ... and a rambo2 knife ?! /images/graemlins/smile.gif
@MacD - jepp, ment to be a stomache (gib). First i wanted to add a footprint, like someone walked over that thing :P but that would have been useless detail (model too small ingame).
My first steps in zBrush and this are the highpoly versions but normalmap looks like the same. After fixing the Uv i may be pimp the stuff i made for Nexuiz. -> /images/graemlins/cool.gif

LordScottish: Good /images/graemlins/wink.gif
JBoskma: Cool frog! You sure picked up modelling fast...
Rorshach: Very nice work, I like it a lot. The thick light lines you've got around the silhouette are kinda destroying the form in some of the lighter areas though, I think it'd look better just on a solid colour/gradient backdrop...
I'd be interested to see how his torso would bend/twist when animated... that armour looks pretty solid!
Really cool design though. He looks very sculpted and massive ... very "there", if you know what I mean.
TGZ: I'd say the black heiroglyphs are a little too cluttered and dark right now, lighten the blackness up a little to fade them some, and maybe space the glyphs further apart to avoid this "overcrowded" look that's going on at the moment... if you want to /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Kevin Johnstone
02-04-2005, 10:51 AM
Thanks for the replies.
He will have a number of land and airborne mounts.
You're right about the lighter rim spoiling appreciation of the arms, and aye, I expect the armour will do some nasty twisting ingame, but most of the mech designs I worked on professionally are worse so I didnt want to be held back too much by that.
He's meant to look like moving would cause him pain, Fomorians like to both give and take pain as they have nothing to do with realism at all.
I'm likewise excited to see him animated as he's the most fun I've had in ages.
Steakhouse
02-04-2005, 01:01 PM
Rorshach: Oh sweet! Will he kill you if his nine atendants manage to crank his massive eyelid open?
All jokes aside your continual comments and work on celtic based concepts got me going on my own research and interpritation. As soon as I have something solid I'll be posting it.
Kevin Johnstone
02-04-2005, 02:12 PM
Steak:heh, I actually considered having a pet demon there to crank open his eyelid but scrapped the idea as it would eat up polys and reduce his ability to look like he's in charge.
I plan to have one the Fomorians carrying a sawn off castle cannon that a pet demon reloads for him though, so the idea of an attendent found a new home

So I found this mesh laying around in my HD I forgot to finish, She's supposed to be a base model that I can add to and scale for diffrent characters, based mostly on comic book style porportions... yes rather large chest and long legs. She's also built to fit the stock biped from epics female merc series... This isnt ideal but I wanted to leave it so she could fit on stock animations if I just wanted a rather fast turn around work flow of modeling and skinning for my personal practice, as well if I want to edit her more so I can build my own biped to match. The part that throws me since this is my first female model(Ive done lots of masculine models) is her upper torso looks a bit small.. not sure if its just me since im used to modelin riped male figures.

Looking good n30, is that for forsaken?

02-08-2005, 06:49 PM
@Pior:
Nice topology so far. But two things could be improved:
1. Outer corner of the eye, the upper eyelid doesn't go around into the lower eyelit like that in reallife (but lots of people get that wrong).
2. The 'wrinkle' that goes from the nose to the corner of the mouth might not be visible that much on younger faces, but with your topology setup in that region it will be hard to do if you plan to model a head with it later.

Looks pretty nice Mop, though I can help but think the feet are too small. Maybe it's just the perspective though.
n30, that looks good! The wrinkles at the crotch look a tad muddy though
MikeF, it's looking a little flat, though feet look way too small, they should be the length of the forearem. Are you going to add a chest plate?
Here's a small update:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v305/Neo_God/3d%20work/BeatrixShot2.jpg
I worked with the proportions a bit, it's not too realistic at the moment, though I'm unsure if I want stylized or realistic. I'm also thinking of adding some wires coming out of the thigh stumps and wrap around the mechanical legs.
Oh yeah, Nealb4me, the concept looks very far from this. The concept was merely a doodle I did during a class. The only similar things are the female torso, and the idea the legs are pointed.

fantastic stuff, people. here's an update from me:
Concept [edit: not drawn by me]
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v192/Sectaurs/Pimpage/tKinan_Mateo_Concept.jpg
Quickly posed models
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v192/Sectaurs/Pimpage/Kinan_Mateo.jpg
lots more texture work to do on them, and i've been told to add more loops in the tail for smoother bending.
JKM, thanks for pointing these. I agree about the eye corner... I was thinking that the top one has to overlap, then check mine and notice it was more like on the model. Then I double check the day after and clearly saw that my observation was wrong, mainly because I was checking from a front view only /images/graemlins/smile.gif Now it's fixed /images/graemlins/smile.gif
About the wrinkle/loops arond the mouth... Well this model is just a base to work from, hence I thought it could be good to have these 'potential' wrinkles ready to go, instead of having to redirect loops on a later model variation which is always a pain. But maybe I went to far... Still have to test this out. And maybe I need to change the topology angle here... Will see.
THanks for the input! Ears are done, it was great fun to model them /images/graemlins/smile.gif

When i get all the gold work done i'll corect the color of it, to more of a brown. Or so i hope...
Daedalus: Cool, i love your creature designs, and the start on the texture is good. A friend of mine is using the Cipher engine too for a game he's making, I'm doing some models for him - is the engine good and easy to work with from an artist's point of view?
TGZ: Are you using Rorshach's recent Balor (sp?) model for reference for this, TGZ? The chestplate design looks awfully familiar...
Also why are there little white highlights around every edge of the gold hardware where it's adjacent to the grey metal? Looks kinda weird...
Yeah, I'd use less saturation and make the highlights more white/brown rather than bright saturated yellow, that will make it look more like gold.
Good work so far though.

Nope, but it's going to. In the meanwhile you could use Q3Fusion (Q2 hacked to death to support q3a stuff), Darkplaces Q1 (Very advanced with perpixel lighting), or FTE Quakeworld (another q1 engine, but supports q2 as well and it's one hell of a combo engine that also supports q3a stuff)

I'm really liking that Thegodzero, do you plan to put some gold trim on the helmet? Or is that included in with "Get all the gold work done"?

as for the chick: The head has a really big star point you might wanna get rid of. and i havnt done too many female characters, but i think the most important thing is subtly. to me, the arms and legs could look a little more feminine. and the area around the boots looks really wierd. you may want to add some geometry detail and see if you can get that connection to flow better.

Still working on this - my first semi-realistic hi-poly head. First time for skin shaders as well, so I've spent a little while tweaking to get to here. Learning a lot though. The texture maps are too small to go this close really, but I wanted to see if the lips were working. There are still too few eyelashes, and they're too regular, and I haven't started on Maya fur eyebrows yet.

Thegodzero: I'm totaly digging that man. /images/graemlins/smile.gif Keep up the good work.
Daz: Thanks, one of his eyes is a cataract on it. Thats why its blueish. /images/graemlins/smile.gif Missed the comment the first time around!
Paul: Awesome. Looking foward to it! Last time you skinned one of my player models I think it was the first one I ever did. /images/graemlins/wink.gif I did base my character on Ian McKellen as gandalf but decided I wanted to create my own wizard character.

Therm: I just don't like the way it looks, the result would look more like FLCL's Canti than what I was aiming for. The concept didn't work the way I wanted so it's back to the drawing board.
damn daz that is one super nice looking model

hey Gzero: for the metal, are you underlaying some reference pic for texture and grit, or did you hand paint it all?
im about to start some metal-areas on my char and just wondering how to do it.

blah.
Tried my hand at an art-test for Dissonance. Failed to notice the specs changed twice since I had started and submitted. They didn't go for it, but it was good practice for me, as my texturing skills need work. 1 evening to model, two to texture. 2100 tris and a 512

you failed to meet their specifications? it looks pretty good, but not necessarily realistic. poly count seems a tad high though, but that just may be me.

they upped the polycount quite a bit (its now 3000-3250 up from 2000-2250) after re-evaluating their engine. about the non-realism, that was mentioned in the reply i got from them. i tried to make it realistic, but just goes to show i need to practice more /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Nice one Dazzles. I agree with mop about the naval though. And his pecs are too cartoony. They stay the same thickness and pinch all the way around. Give them a bit of meet and roundness where the nipple is on the curve. They are normally a bit more square than you currently have them.

badge, Some of the grit is from a three part texture overlay to make it not so clean. But the grit is just pictures of diffrent types of dirt.
Played with this some more tonight. Yeah TGZ, looks like Im turning him into that Demon I think. Fixed the cartoony pecs. Still working on abs of course. Therm, no he aint rigged. Im taking some creative license with the pose. The navel is actually the right height. It's just an optical illusion 'cos his lower belly is sticking out and the crotch isn't pulled down low enough yet.

update~
some more texturin on the monument, and a 'light post' for the walkways that'll be on the level.. gonna look into whether i can do the effects i want to put in the space between the sections within hl2's engine or if i should just add some polies and texture in a surface (hoping for the former).

Bloody hell, daz. I love to see that zbrush hasn't made everybody shy away from good clean old-fashioned polymodeling. Technical issues aside, I very much look forward to seeing this completed. This is so appealing to me.. the little folds of flesh, the twist of the brachioradialis, the subtle definition of chest muscles... man, it makes me giddy like a schoolgirl

It's been a while since I posted anything. Heres some high poly models i've been working on and off for a while now.
All done in max.
2nd attempt. Some of you might remember him from one of the comp over at cgchat. I changed his proportions a little and i'm going to give it some clothing/mechanical parts.

looks cool man, the monster thing would have probably taken 1/10th the time u spent on it if u did it in zbrush, but I can understand why u'd want to model it all up in max. looks cool.
the chick is cool too, nice nipples. the eyes may be a little too big/too wide apart, hard to say though, maybe shape up the eyelid a little more? it just looks like 2 spheres bulging out of her face. nice model tho.
Awesome woman there Shadows.
The monster is good too, I love the arms, but the face's detail seems fairly random and doesn't show much structure IMHO. Nice how you set it up with the materials, it almost looks like a Zbrush model.

Welcome back shadows! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif Great stuff! I love the attention to detail on the monsters head/arms. He's got breasticles too ;D
Shadows: I'll show you mine If you show me yours ;-)
Fantastic stuff mate. She's got a very realistic look to her. Only stuff Im not sure about are the fake boobs and the clavicle. Will post some wires when I get home later!
Shadow: To be honest I don't like the monster in it's current form. those "tits" look really out of place. like you took them from the chick and merged them with the beast. a big beast like that should have breasts that compliment the overal look.

mr_Rockstar : Yea that's what I wish I would have done, the wire is getting quite messy, heh.
And you're right the eyes are to far apart.
MoP : Some of those random lumps and alot of them are random , hehe, will be removed. Mainly the ones inbetween the eyes and the roll of fat on the neck.
n30g3n3s1s : "He's got breasticles too" lol and they are going to be hairy too. /images/graemlins/wink.gif
Daz : hehe here you go /images/graemlins/smile.gif
Jayden wire (http://www.stevensart.com/temp/WIP/project_baby_soup/Jayden-wire.jpg)
Sibup wire (http://www.stevensart.com/temp/WIP/project_baby_soup/sibup5-wire.jpg), quite messy but I guess it would do the job for normal mapping.
The boobs need some touch ups they are supposed to be natural, I think I just need to soften up the transition between the top part of the breast and the torso and maybe getting rid of some of that canyon :P. The clavicle and the neck muscle needs some work aswell.

That very much resembles a race of beings from a prototype game I'm developing, that Robert Cirrilo concepted for the project:

http://cyrob.com/Project_X/Pics/X_106_L.jpg
Great work on the model. I hope similarities wont be too bad on the finished peices. If you are turning him into the red demon then no worries, ours have a crustation like shader for skin textures.
Then again, I've been seeing more and more similar concepts and mdoels lately. Guess I need to get cracking.
Nice shadows. About the same density as I tend to get to I think. Yeah i think you're right about the boobs. It's where they transition into the body at the top and the outer sides that makes them look silicon. Wire: http://home.comcast.net/~dpattenden/images/wire.jpg
Cool Downsizer. Hadn't seen those before. Yeah my fellow was based on that Demon sketch I did ages ago. He's a lot leaner than your guy I think. I wouldn't worry about him looking too similiar. My model is early days. It's just a bare muscular torso and a head without a mouth. Oh, I guess that's pretty similiar ;-)

@JKMakowka: i dont think the upper legs are short but i will see about tweaking it ... from the front view the proportions seem to be allright .. maybe it's the angle in the perspective
