Starting a new texture set...
http://cor.planetquake.gamespy.com/codered/testpics/tekwall1.jpg
http://cor.planetquake.gamespy.com/codered/testpics/light1.jpg
irritant: the top one needs a LOT more detail for the size that it is. more hand painted 1pixel detail, and i'd definitely kick back the dark shadows a bit, along with the bright light in the middle. even on older tech (which i'm assuming you're still working with) that much baked lighting pretty much wont look good.
Irritant
01-12-2007, 09:57 PM
Removed the lighting in the middle /images/graemlins/smile.gif That texture will be scaled down to 1/2 that size in maps...hmm dark shadows, you're right they are too dark. (edit) toned them down some
The main issue with the shadows is still there. they are too dark, and really the most crippling factor about them is that they are directional shadows cast from an angle.
The light is coming from the top right. If this texture was on a map and there was a light to the bottom left, it would look completely silly.
You should use some baked AO and maybe maybe a little top down shadows, but if ever possible try to stay away from very profound casting shadows like that.

Hello everyone,
I'm new here to the Polycount forums. Thought I would start things off by posting something I was thinking about revisiting and revamping. I did this about five years ago and was never quite pleased with the colors in the texture map (I think they are a bit too saturated). Anyway, comments and suggestions are welcome.

great, i only use meshes like this for sculpting now, its super flexible and much easier to make changes to. not to mention how much faster it is, it would of taken twice as long if i tried to define all the proportions with the base mesh. i can really sculpt any head i want from just that one mesh.

yeah you might be right, if i leave it on its own.
the idea is, that its for either DS or cellphones. If i were to use it in a cellphone game, i would include all textures in one sheet, so the 48x48 would be part of a much bigger texture. im not sure, if you could just do the same on the DS, i don't have any experience with 3d on that system.
aniceto:
wow thats amazing, really cool design.
Wow aniceto that's rock solid!
Do you mind telling which realtime preview method you used on this? So far I've seen many different ones possible in max but each had flaws (mirror seams, lights not updating aso) hence I was curious to hear which one you used here. JIStyle's gave me great results on skin but I have not tested it with metals yet.
Your model seems to render perfectly even including things like colored specular and glow, so yeah if you don't mind sharing...

Nice one Pior, I like it a lot better without the toon shaded outlines. That just seems to muck it up, especially around her lips and hands. The final shot without it looks much nicer.

To make a graphic that looks shit on purpose! Bwahahaha! http://boards.polycount.net/images/icons/poly123.gif
Behold, the retina-burning EGA color palette... First introduced in 1984, how's that for oldschool?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v19/wayuki/ega_palette.gif
And now for the graphic:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v19/wayuki/wayuki-egadoll.gif
She also fits within the EGA screen resolution of 320x200 pixels, which would make her pretty much full-screen. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

por, nice stuff, though I have to say, the gas pump does feel almost TOO rusty. i.e. it's very uniform and i think it might be more effective to break it up and just have the scratches & rust in specific parts (corners & high use areas) and then leave some of the paint that you can fade, to add to the age without just beating it to shit LOL
Nice work though, keep it up.

Probably CGA... but I do know that Sierra did graphical remakes in EGA and VGA of their older adventure games at one point.
I don't think I will try a CGA one... the magenta/cyan/black/white palette just makes my brain itch. http://boards.polycount.net/images/icons/poly128.gif

Eric: your painting continues to improve, and while I know those are just experiments, I think you might want to be careful. Your last few pieces remind me of Photoshop art from people who have just learned Photoshop and can't get enough of certain filters. It's one of the dangers of playing with custom brushes, particularly if they're not your own--you just want to play with these new really cool toys and you lose sight of the painting itself a little, right?
A lot of the depth/clarity of your pieces have suffered since playing with the Barontieri brushes/Sparth clonestamping. I have faith that you'll find your way around these tools/techniques with some more practice and integrate them better into your own art, but don't force it.
Better yet, if you like some of the effects that the Barontieri brushs provide, build your own. They won't match perfectly, but they'll be your own variation, brushes you understand from the ground up.
CA.org is a wonderful community that nurtures a lot of talented artists, but it also unfortunately breeds copycats and art-drones. Be careful about drawing too much water from the same well as all those hundreds of other guys /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Tennis.. that is truly bad-ass! I think what you need to do to that front end to make it more aggressive is move the headlights out the edges of the fenders, give them a pointed top (either coming together /\ or to one side |\ ) and then widen that grill out plus give it a curved top /---\ with fewer but wider vertical chrome pieces. 1024x1024 diffuse, normals and 24-bit spec maps. 192 triangles. Overkill I know, but I just wanted to mess around.
Still need to add some decals to the textures (like "This Way Up" and some icons, etc.). yeah nice one pior, allthough her croth area should be much more detailed like with a 100 more polys and an own 512 texture, nothing beats a sexy well light crotch on a bathing suit oh yeah, and shimmer demands more normal maps for the people.
Looking good rooster, I would use less brushes with a hard falloff, I tryed that to, but it was much more of an issue to me to get the forms going with so much pinchyness on the mesh, seems much harder to me. Shimmer demands more normalmaps for the people.
... yeah normal maps, normal maps I´m nothing new, giving me more definition to the surface I´m giving to tadadada

Dude, that's my PC desk :P
Extremely close, anyways. Looks pretty solid. Now toss a normal/spec map on it /images/graemlins/smile.gif
we have almost the same desk then:).
that door already has a spec if you look closely.
You can see the spec a bit better on this video.:

Woah ... looks more like a reflection map than spec. Looks a bit like there is a glass panel over top of it. I would suggest a MUCH more muted spec with no reflection mask.
hey , thanks man it looks better now..i think.
http://img479.imageshack.us/img479/8571/screenshot2rd9.png
but ive just applied basic specularity. Any suggestions on how to create a good spec map for the door?

lookin great seth, and fluffy that is lookin fine, ease up on the dark shading and lighting, i think it is making the metal look a bit organic rather than smooth metal surfaces.
